  1. Re the letter from the editor:

Such an eloquent Cri de Coeur. Right thinking Americans – aka “the enemy within” – understandably fear the wrong outcome. But those of us living elsewhere have an equally strong revulsion at the possible triumph of evil this month. Not least because of the potential damage the rest of the world will suffer at the hands of a fascist dictator in the White House. Giving succour to those who despise the idea of democracy. Letting Putin’s brutal regime win a war in Europe. Making US allies into enemies. Halting progress in tackling the climate emergency. Starting an era of tit for tat trade tariffs. Undermining the UN and any attempt at a fairer world order. Turning America’s back on helping the undeveloped world, and reducing global poverty and hunger. Failing to protect and preserve the rich diversity of the natural world. Abandoning efforts to tame the worst excesses of global capital. Undoing progress in women’s rights. There is so much at stake, for those of us with no vote at all. So we rely on the good sense of the American electorate, of which Magpies is an exemplar.

    • Oh I know! I know. Sadly much of the world seems to be tilting right/fascist at the moment as well.

The U.S. has lost a lot of its power and I think that’s good, especially as our moral compass is so far askew at the moment.

Not sure where to look for comfort at the moment!
