Tell me what Jazz is and I’ll tell you who you are… please can you also tell me what Zen is!

Jazz and Zen, which from now on I will call Jazz’n, defy definitions as they are totally imbued with simplicity as to make them unlabelable, and on the other hand recognizable from the first notes one and from the first sensations the other.

If we listen to music to which we are unable to attach any label, there is a good chance that it is Jazz and if we detect immense depth expressed in greater simplicity it is Zen that welcomes us, both open up to experiences with a multiple degree of expressive freedom. Jazz’n can teach everything or it can teach nothing, once again elusive but incisive.

Music represents nature and nature, life. Jazz represents nature and consequently, jazz is life or rather, an expressive modality of the Self, in the most absolute freedom, drawing liberally from sources of creativity inherent in an inextricable way from life itself.

“Zen is the essence of life, the set of all those values for which life is worth living. It cannot be formulated in definite terms, for it cannot be reduced to words or thoughts or described in terms. As Taoism,  the father of Zen, had to declare about the Tao: “The Tao that can be described is not the true, eternal Tao”.

The jazz that we are going to try to describe is not eternal jazz, as the feelings of those who perform it and those who listen to it change,  even the execution of a “standard” will never be identical and will always recall the personal Self of its executor.

This freedom, once dreamed of by enslaved men, with unbeknownst to them a seed of Zen inherent in their hearts (this I like to think), has brought us jazz’n as I now conceive it.

 Free to love it or hate it… to practice it or not, anyway Jazz’n, it is.

Dimmi cosa è il Jazz e ti dirò chi sei… per favore puoi dimmi anche cosa è lo Zen! Il Jazz e lo Zen, che d’ora in poi chiamerò Jazz’n, rifuggono alle definizioni in quanto totalmente pregni di semplicità da renderli inetichettabili, e per contro riconoscibili dalle prime note l’uno e dalle prime sensazioni l’altro. Se ascoltiamo una musica alla quale non riusciamo ad appiccicare nessuna etichetta, ci sono buone probabilità che sia Jazz e se rileviamo immensa profondità espressa nella maggior semplicità è lo Zen ad accoglierci, entrambi aprono ad esperienze con un grado molteplice di libertà espressiva. Jazz’n può insegnare tutto o può non insegnare nulla, ancora una volta sfuggente ma incisivo.

La musica rappresenta la natura e la natura, la vita. Il jazz rappresenta la natura e di conseguenza, il jazz è vita o meglio, un modalità espressiva del Sè, nella libertà più assoluta, attingendo a piene mani da fonti di creatività insite in modo inestricabile dalla vita stessa.

“Lo Zen è l’essenza della vita, l’insieme di tutti quei valori per cui la vita val la pena d’esser vissuta. Esso non può essere formulato in termini definiti, poiché non si lascia ridurre alle parole o ai pensieri o descrivere in termini. Come il Taoismo, padre dello Zen, ebbe a dichiarare a proposito del Tao: “Il Tao che si può descrivere non è il vero, eterno Tao””.

Il jazz che andiamo a tentar di descrivere non è l’eterno jazz, in quanto mutevole dei sentimenti di chi lo esegue e di chi lo ascolta, anche l’esecuzione di uno “standard” non sarà mai identica e richiamerà ogni volta al Sé personale del suo esecutore.

Questa libertà, un tempo sognata da uomini fatti schiavi, con a loro insaputa un seme di zen. insito nei cuori (questo mi piace pensare), ci ha portato il jazz’n come ora io lo concepisco.

Liberi di amarlo o odiarlo… di praticarlo o no, in ogni modo lo Jazz’n, è.
